Manje Gowda S J:Maize Molecular Breeder – Africa, CIMMYT
Manje Gowda is a senior maize molecular geneticist based in Kenya with CIMMYT’s Global Maize Program. His research focuses on the discovery, validation, and deployment of molecular markers associated with key traits, including grain quality, disease resistance, and tolerance to abiotic stresses such as drought and heat. I work to integrate genomic tools into breeding pipelines to enhance efficiency and accuracy of selection. The goal is to accelerate the rate of genetic gain in maize, particularly for smallholder farmers in sub-Saharan Africa, by developing resilient and high-yielding maize varieties. His efforts contribute to strengthening food and nutritional security by ensuring that improved maize germplasm is better adapted to current and future challenges in diverse agro-ecological zones across the region. He has guided 18 MSc/PhD students and published over 100 peer-reviewed articles. From 2009 to 2023, he was a postdoc at the University of Hohenheim, focusing on hybrid wheat and trait discovery in Triticale, barley, rye, rice, sugar beet and chickpea.
